In the palace of art, each painting is a unique reflection of the artist's mind. Have you ever explored the secret of time in a painting, feeling the delicacy and depth of life intertwined with light and shadow? Vermeer captured the tranquil moments of daily life in 17th century Netherlands with his extraordinary artistic talent. His works are like a mirror, reflecting the deep emotions of human nature and understanding of the world. On the afternoon of January 13, Guo Liang, professor of Shanghai University, Wei Chang Scholar of Shanghai University and doctoral supervisor of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, visited Tianyi Lecture Hall of Ningbo Library and gave a lecture on "The Profound Painting World - Vermeer's Art and Life".
In the lecture, Guo Liang stated that Vermeer himself had diverse interests and possessed profound knowledge in the fields of optics, cartography, music, geography and astronomy, and was full of philosophy and introspective spirit. His paintings represent a kind of cosmic harmony, and from the beginning of Vermeer's childhood, he has been deeply influenced by new natural philosophy and rigorous method. Thoreau Bugger referred to Vermeer's depiction of maps as a "fanaticism of maps," and his understanding of science and his representation in illustrations distanced Vermeer from many Dutch painters.
Among them, Renaissance figures Alberti and Leonardo da Vinci were outstanding. A fascinating segment of Vermeer's private world, Guo added, was also expected to evolve on more intellectual and creative levels. This is due not only to the "visual feast" that the master leads us into, as he describes it, but also from such a origin, as Bukhart's wonderful comment on artists, "they are fully aware of their own versatile and somewhat inexplicable nature, so that they can dimly sense that there is a power in the world that matches their own mysterious power." In this way, the poet and the artist are surrounded by a broader world, which in the form of pictures, communicates with the inner world of poets and artists who are good at illustrating, and this is the world of art."
